About Wasps

The Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and German Wasp (Vespula germanica) are the most common species found in the UK and are almost identical in appearance. If very large wasps are seen they may be queens, hornets or what are now commonly called European wasps.

Wasp Colonies can be between 3,000 and 30,000 individuals.

The Queen emerges from hibernation in mid-April, constructs 10 to 20 chambers and lays eggs in each one, sterile female workers hatch and by late summer the colony reaches 3,000 to 30,000 individuals. Males and new Queens are produced in late summer, males mate with the new Queens and then die. The Queen wasps in turn fly off to find an over winter hibernation site usually inside buildings or hollow trees.

The toxic sting

The pain of a wasp sting is caused by a toxic fluid, which is injected through the needle like sting. Individuals react differently to stings, with some suffering considerable pain and swelling. Unfortunately none of the well-known remedies give much relief although some specific remedies are available from chemists.

What can you do?

Tackle the problem early

From late summer to early autumn wasps can be more aggressive as their main food source diminishes.

Wasps often build their nests in inaccessible places, such as lofts, cavity walls, underground and many other, out of the way places. Don’t worry though, we will locate them!
